In any movement for social change, young people have always played a crucial role. From the Civil Rights Movement to campus activism, youth leaders bring fresh perspectives, energy, and a willingness to challenge the status quo. Developing youth leaders in community organizing spaces is essential because it ensures the sustainability of movement building and fosters a culture of change that lasts beyond a single generation. When young people are empowered with leadership opportunities, they gain the confidence and skills needed to address pressing social issues and inspire their peers to take action.
Investing in youth leadership also leads to more innovative and inclusive organizing strategies. Young leaders often bring new ideas and utilize digital tools to mobilize their communities in ways that older generations may not have considered. By mentoring and supporting young folks, experienced organizers can help bridge generational gaps and create more effective, adaptable movements. Encouraging youth leadership also ensures that the voices of those most impacted by social injustices—often young people themselves—are at the forefront of advocacy efforts.

By fostering youth leadership, Students Organizing the South cultivates a pipeline of intentional individuals who will continue working in alignment toward justice for our communities.
As Students Organizing the South prepares to kick off our Spring Organizing Advancement Program (SOAP), we prioritize the duty to shift resources and develop our youth leaders. This program consists of fellows who have completed our Fall Organizing Fellowship and have shown a deeper commitment to community and power building. It’s important to meet our youth where they are so that we may grow together. We also challenge you, our community, to ask the youth around you how they would like to be developed! You never know what knowledge you can pass on.
