Who put ‘Build’ in the Block & Build fund? We did, of course! With a lot of heart, dedication, and care, the powerbuilding team at SVA launched the Block & Build Rapid Response Fund in April of 2025!
After our robust regranting efforts this year, we’ve seen and heard just how many organizations are working to push back and create change in our current systems. We are proud that this fund has helped organizations gain momentum and carry forth this changemaking energy.
Here are some of the accomplishments and insights we have learned from grantmaking:
Accomplishments:
- Amount of Money Granted: $79,440
- Number of Grants Awarded: 30
- Key Issues Addressed: Immigrant Defense, Trans Rights, Housing Justice, Community safety counters to ICE and Dept. of Homeland Security, and Support of organizing strategies within impacted communities.
Grantee Organizations Located In: North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Texas, Tennessee, Arkansas, Alabama and Louisiana.
Insights:
- Clear Goals & Values: Who decides who gets the money? We use a community-based advisory board who evaluate applications based on a rubric. While the process can be refined over time, it is essential to maintain a consistent and clear approach for allocating funds.
- Communication Is Key: Don’t get lost in a game of telephone! Be in ongoing relationship with the leadership of those directly impacted. Make sure to stay transparent on the workings of the fund so organizations understand the timeline and requirements.
- Speed & Efficiency: Don’t let perfect be the enemy of good! Keep the grant application process straightforward and accessible. Support organizations as they apply. Put in place an appropriate amount of screening and due diligence.
- Get the Word Out: Encourage organizations to submit! Use the connections of your community and former grantees to be ambassadors for the fund. Make sure groups know about virtual office hours and have opportunities to ask questions and get feedback on their proposals.
SVA’s Development Director, Manzoor Cheema said, “We are currently witnessing a crisis of constitution and democracy that has not been seen by many people in their lifetime.” In light of the times we are living in, Block & Build’s grantmaking work is more vital than ever.
We hold a hopeful vision for what is possible in 2026, because we must continue to support grassroots movements across the southeast. With collective power the impossible becomes possible, and visions become reality!
