Since establishing the organization in early 2025, our collective members have been working to slowly and intentionally bring the vision of our work to life.
A little bit about us: Abolitionist Education Collective (AEC) is a resource hub for educators to learn, collaborate, strategize, and deepen their abolitionist praxis. We work to cultivate lasting alternatives to punishment and control, radically transform all learning spaces, and abolish the school-prison nexus.
Our work is the work of abolitionist education: a commitment to collectively dismantle systems that replicate prisons, policing, and carceral logics that cause harm in the spaces we learn.
This fall, we launched our inaugural workshop series called “Schools as Disabling Institutions.” This three-part workshop series examined how the logics, practices, and structures of conventional schooling are disabling to students, educators, communities, and ultimately, larger social movements. We discussed the ways schooling disconnects students from their bodyminds, and creates and enforces conditions to dispose of students and educators. We also practiced designing connection-centered learning spaces that meet, rather than ignore and work against, people’s needs. Our collective members are currently working on a resource guide that includes questions & insights from the series, and we also plan to lead an updated version of the offering next year!
We are also in the middle of the soft launch of our Student and Educator Solidarity Fund. This fund provides $350 to students and educators experiencing repression and harassment. The fund will also support AEC’s effort to collect and share data about the various forms of repression faced by students and educators and the many brilliant ways folks are coming together to fight back. Once we officially open the fund in early 2026, we hope to support and build with dozens of students, K-12 school-based educators, and autonomous educators facing repercussions for their critical educational and organizing work.
