Now, more than ever, safe and accessible physical spaces are critical to keep building towards, fighting for, and dreaming up the new world together.
We need your help! Whether you’ve hosted many events at the Hub, you’ve come to make signs for a rally, you’ve been to a mutual aid group meet up, joined a yoga class, or you’ve never heard of us, we need all of us to tend to our beloved movement space.
As you may or may not know, the People’s Solidarity Hub is a movement hub that supports emergent efforts by grassroots groups and hosts welcoming community building activities. We are an accessible cultural and creative joining space. We foster collaboration between community members, organizations, and groups moving towards collective liberation.
Just this year, PSH has hosted nearly 500 events, meetings, celebrations, art shows, mutual aid groups, practices, preparations for marches and protests, and convenings. A highlight of a few of the events this year include:
- The LGBTQ Center of Durham & the Rainbow Collective for Change’s MLK Day event “Hope Is A Song” with more than 200 people.
- Jewish Voices for Peace’s Movement Elders Panel.
- Durham Association of Educators’ public school worker union, Durham Tenants’ Circle, Durham Workers’ Assembly, Carolina Federation, and many other groups’ regular meeting space.
- Siembra NC’s workplace defense planning and training on how to protect immigrant workers, 4th Amendment Rights, and how to keep us safe from ICE & It’s Our Future’s Know-Your-Rights workshops.
- T4T care Collective, mutual aid and co-working for our trans community, and Lavender Fellowship for queer community swap and skill share.
- Coyote Institute’s bodywork trainings on Indigenous knowledge and practices, Rights of Nature info session by 7 Directions of Service, an Indigenous-led collective rooted in environmental justice, Art Unchained Rehearsal to cultivate healing through movement, art, and knowledge.
- Grief healing circles; generative somatic practice groups; meditation & yoga practice groups.
We offer accessible and sliding scale rates to use the space and want to continue to make this possible.
This takes time, labor, coordination and resources. It costs nearly $200,000 per year to operate the People’s Solidarity Hub – that’s about $16,000 per month. Individual donors have historically made up around 30% of our annual contributions. As the funding landscape shifts and becomes more and more unpredictable, our hope is to build a more robust individual donor base so that our existence doesn’t have to depend on the uncertainty of philanthropy’s capacities and priorities. We know we need us and we need all of us to keep giving our movements safe and accessible physical spaces to gather.
With the changing funding landscape and looming uncertainty of how we’ll fund our liberation movements, we need to create our own funding ecosystem of everyday sustainers. No amount is insignificant.
Help us continue to hold and nurture this safe and accessible space for our many local activists, visionaries, artists, healers, and community members.
Our goal of $4,000 per month will only cover a fourth of our monthly costs, but our hope is that we can keep building from this pod and grow our sustainer base in this coming year.
Just to make our fundraiser a little more fun, we invite you to become a monthly sustainer of at least $10/month or make a one-time donation of at least $25 and enter our raffle to win an assortment of amazing prizes that can be a treat for yourself or a loved one in the upcoming holiday season.
