Position: NoCap Fellowship Associate 

Hours/week: 20 hours per week 

Duration of Contract:  May 1 – Dec 31, 2021 with a 90-day review

Compensation: Between $18,000 – $20,000 depending on experience

Summary 

The Southern Vision Alliance (SVA) is looking for a NoCap Fellowship Associate. This person must have a demonstrated commitment to SVA’s mission, vision, and values. 

Who We Are

NoCap is a region-wide, youth-led organization supporting young, Black and Brown people to build our power. Our work is focused on North Carolina’s historically Black college and university (HBCU) campuses, and we’re accountable to our communities across the state and the US South. Our strategy:

• We build our base year-round through racial and economic justice campaigns and civic engagement. 
• We meet our people where they are, using innovative cultural and community approaches. 
• Throughout, we build leadership. We’re committed to ensuring that our staff, fellows, and members have the tools that they need to be lifelong organizers and leaders in our communities. 

Where We Build

We organize Black and Brown students on college campuses, especially HBCUs, and young people in our communities. Our state’s HBCUs are typically located in the heart of the Black community, which gives us the opportunity to tailor our programming to students and non-student youth. While not all Black communities are the same, we believe that together, we can change the face of the electorate and advance new visions for justice.

Desirable knowledge, skills, abilities

• Recent graduate or emerging organizer with experience organizing for social justice on the campus or local level
• Passionate about moving others to action 
• Low & healthy ego
• Passionate and skilled at responding to the needs of student and youth organizers—working through difficult personal situations, communicating on an ad hoc basis, and providing mentorship

Required knowledge, skills, abilities 

• Clear and demonstrated commitment to NoCap’s core values of social justice, racial justice, and collective liberation
• Clear and demonstrated commitment to working with groups on campus and in communities that represent marginalized populations
• Accountable, proactive, and communicative
• Able to take regular calls and be responsive to contingencies 
• Able to build and mobilize strong local networks
• Strong communication skills
• Computer literacy, including word processing, desktop publishing and database software
• Skilled in Excel or other types of spreadsheets

Responsibilities include

• Recruit and manage a team of young organizing fellows from across North Carolina. 
• Provide training, support, and leadership development to fellows to advance local organizing programs rooted on campus and in the surrounding community. Program work includes mapping campus power, identifying leaders, canvassing for support, holding meetings, working with social and traditional media, planning actions, and engaging young voters.
• Implement fellowship programming and advise on program design.
• Build and maintain relationships with youth and community partner organizations. 
• Participate in regular team, coalition, and national strategy calls. 
• Provide consistent daily and weekly reporting to NoCap team as needed.
• Provide administrative support to Jonah Vincent.
• Other duties as assigned.

• Supervised by Jonah Vincent
• Report to Jonah Vincent and the NoCap team
• Collaborate with staff to complete responsibilities
