DURHAM, N.C. – Social justice grassroots intermediary Southern Vision Alliance received some incredible news this year when they were informed that an anonymous donor, who turned out to be MacKenzie Scott, wanted to invest $3M in their organization.

“We were contacted last year by a group of donor advisors who were impressed by our track record and asked if they could look under the hood. After a few phone calls and sending over our audits, we didn’t hear anything back for months. We figured the donor had moved on – then we got a call out of the blue asking for an interview. Within days we got the news of the incoming donation,” says Executive Director Joshua Vincent.

“For an organization like Southern Vision Alliance, who works exclusively with grassroots groups led by directly impacted communities in the south, raising funds has always been an uphill battle. We support groups working on racial justice, economic justice, LGBTQ justice, and youth empowerment, in other words, communities that are often left behind. We run a community center that operates on a sliding scale. We carefully steward the resources that come in and out of the organization, so an investment like this is enormous and speaks to the impact we’ve been able to make.”

According to the MacKenzie Scott Foundation website:

Her giving prioritizes “community-led, community-focused organizations whose explicit purpose is to advance the voices and opportunities of individuals and families of meager or modest means, and groups who have met with discrimination and other systemic obstacles.”
